Like his mentor Hudson, Cartier wanted to find a Northwest Passage to India and Asia, and the spice islands though, he also had another reason. His family was the premier watch manufacture of Europe, he was looking for new places to trade. There is also more to his motiviation, he was claiming land for his people, got gold by trading, and made relation ships friendly local people.

Found corn by trading with Native Americans, named a bay the St. Lawrence River, claimed witch is now Canada, named a mountain Monte Real and Mount Royal. When he got lost, he tried to build a settlement in Quebec in 1541, but the weather was too harsh so he abandoned it.
